Over the years, I have heard many things about victims, usually about criminal activity.
Many victims have either been made out to be the cause of the crime, or not taken seriously because of who they are or their occupation.
In my opinion, everyone who is a victim of a crime, whether serious or minor, is still a victim and therefore deserves to be treated equally.
Not many of you know the following story, unless you have read my novel:
In 2005, I had some issues and had gone out for a while, as per usual, went to catch a ferry, as this helped me relax and calm down too.
I calmed down, however, missed the last ferry back to the city.
Thankfully, the bus arrived around 45 minutes later.
Once it arrived in the city, I alighted.
As I didn’t live too far away, decided to walk home.
This walk took me, unfortunately, through a dangerous area. I had no choice but to walk through there
I was approached by a male who demanded favours, which I obliged as he scared me.
However, afterwards he got abusive towards me, by physically assaulting me.
I ended up in hospital and was interviewed, however, as the assailant had given their statement, I was now accused of being the assailant, as I was asked many personal questions, but because at the time, I was living as female, and I feel it affected the questions.
I felt it was an ambush as I was recovering from the assault, and felt the interview could have waited until I had been released.
Thankfully I was cleared.
My point is, just because someone is in an area, does not mean they are up to no good or seeking any unwanted attention. Nor should they be treated any differently.
No matter the crime or the victim, each should be treated equally, and favourably.
Neither should someone be dismissed by how they were dressed.
We are all human beings and therefore MUST be treated Fairly, Equally and Without Judgement.
